Why do we like Bella?

She comes across as a very strong character.  She’s willing to sacrifice her own happiness for her mom.  She’s intelligent, or at least book smart.  She’s not overly confident or cocky, which appeals to most of us.  But she’s totally lacking self-control or conviction.  The fact that she even persues a relationship with a guy that gives her death looks and warns her to stay away proves she a bit unstable.  Yes he saved her twice (the whole Florence Nightenegale thing).  Fine but as I think about it more and more it just seems as though she is really inconsistent and hopelessly flawed. … Yes so are we, I’m not condemning her or saying she’s not worth loving or anything.  My point is if she’s so much like the rest of us why do we love her so much?  She’s really not all that extraordinary, she’s not as selfless as she initially seems.  So why do you love her?

Bella

How do you fell about the character development in this series?

Bella defines herself in twilight on p. 140 as someone Who “simply followed through”.  She claims herself to have been the responsible one and yet not long after she’s engaged she’s kissing her “best friend”; crying over him after she tells herself she won’t.  Also after Jake overhears they’re engaged and Edward leaves to go get him she commits to saying goodbye but doesn’t follow through?  What do you think of this character development?

Personal Reflection

What qualities do you admire in the Twilight series?  Why?

What qualities do you dislike and why?

Character analysis

Which characters are you drawn to in the twilight series and why?

In other novels you’ve read and re-read what drew you to the novels and love of the characters?

Bella and Renee

Okay Bella clearly sees herself as the paternal figure here.  His is not entirely inconsistent for a child raised by a young single mom.  However why does she cling to her mother’s concept of not getting married so strongly when she doesn’t seem to hold onto any of her other teachings at all?  I can’t think of a single reference to any other preconceived notion that Bella has carried with her from either of her parents.  Yet she’s fortunate enough to have found the “man of her existence” at such a young age, saving years of heartache and loneliness and all she can do is reject his proposals.  She’s going to be dead who cares if she’s married.  Hello!!!!!!  Also for those of us and I’m sure it’s everyone here that has read the first chapter of breaking dawn.  Her mother’s perfectly okay with her marrying Edward and clarifies that marriage wasn’t okay for herself that young, but Bella was always mature for her age and isn’t surprised at all because of the intensity of their relationship.  So why is she still having hang ups about marriage and cars?  Does this seem consistent with either one of their character’s development?

Jacob

Okay so Jacob starts out easy going in twilight and in New Moon because Edwards not around he feels some liberties and she is spending all of her time with him so it’s easy to see how he falls in love with her and is happy to receive whatever she’ll give him.  After he becomes a werewolf he becomes more intense, makes sense.  However how do you fell about the ending.  Does it seem like his characterr, after manipulating her to kiss him when he knows she’s engaged, to just walk away? (or run actually)

Edward

Okay Edward’s struggling with his desire to be with Bella and not kill her.  He thinks it’s selfish for her to give up her mortality to be with him, eventhough he wants to be with her forever, Eclipse p. 273 “For me to allow this – to let you become what I am just so that I’ll never have to lose you – is the most self act I can imagine.  I ant it more than anything for myself.  But for you, I want so much more.  Giving in – it feels criminal.  It’s the most self thing I’ll ever do, even if I live forever. AHHHHHHHHHHH

How romantic is that?  Okay so he’s a sacrificer, full of ethics and moral, he doesn’t want to take her virtue, or her soul.  What about the last scene in the book, do you think it’s consistent with his characters develoment? p.617-619.

what would you write:

Edward decides it’s not so easy to forgive Bella for making out with Jake when she’s engaged to him, and tells her to go to him…..  You finish the scene. And say why you write it that way.
